Exterior Paint Protection Tips

How to keep your vehicle looking newer for longer. Damage prevention trumps repairs every time.

In addition to making your vehicle look great, exterior paint is the first line of defence against rusted body panels. Thus, it is important to keep your vehicle’s paint job in good condition. Here are some tips to keep your car’s paint job in top shape.

If parking your car in a garage isn’t an option, try parking it in the shade or use a car cover to protect it from sun exposure, which can damage your car’s paint. Car covers offer a thin layer of cushioning against light impact, like hail or a tipped bicycle, as well as protecting against the sun’s ultraviolet rays, bird droppings, sap, and rain.

Waxing your car regularly is an important step in caring for the paint, as the wax creates a hard, protective shell against the elements. While waxing your car can be a time-consuming process, the hard work is always rewarded. Liquid and spray waxes offer a quick shine, but do little in actually protecting your car, so paste wax is still the best option to get the most durable finish. When selecting a past wax, try to find one with a high carnauba wax content.

Consider these tips to get the most out of an afternoon spent waxing your car.

  1. Ensure your car is clean and dry before waxing. If too much dirt is on your car when you wax, the polishing process could scratch the paint. Water droplets on the surface of your car can cause the wax to streak, making the buffing process unnecessarily difficult.
  2. Apply a thin and even coat of wax with a damp sponge – too much wax can make your job difficult and leave residue.
  3. Use a clean cotton or microfibre cloth to remove wax once it has dried. Make sure your cloth is clean, or buffing could cause fine scratches.
  4. Wax on the hood and nose of your car tends to wear out faster than anywhere else. Because of this, apply an extra coat to these areas.

Prevent, Don’t Repair

The best thing you can do for your vehicle’s paint is to keep it newer, longer. You do this by preventing damage before it happens, instead of trying to repair and mask carless damage after the fact. For this, your best option to protect your car’s body panels is to give it a new skin. Self-adhering Paint Protection films are designed to protect the exterior of your vehicle from chips and abrasions. These films can be washed and waxed along with the rest of your vehicle, and you can peel them off yourself at any time. To ensure proper installation, it is best to have them put on by a professional. Our installers do this all day, and as trained technicians in the Autobahn program you will enjoy LIFETIME WARRANTY on their work. That is how good they are.
